Stroud News and Journal reporters were first on the scene after the freshly killed roe deer was disovered on Wednesday near Edge by walker Dave Davies.
Prior to the find Mr Davies said he had been a sceptic on the subject of big cats,.
But he now admits, after seeing that the deer’s ribcage had been bitten through and organs removed,he is open to the idea.
Big cat expert Frank Tunbridge joined the SNJ on the scene within hours of the kill and said the deer had been killed earlier that morning.
However, mystery surrounds the nature of the beast’s death after Mr Tunbridge spotted that it had been shot between the eyes at point blank range.
But he insisted it had been eaten by a big cat.
"It is the freshest carcass that I have seen since the deer was found at Woodchester and it has all the signs that it was eaten by a big cat," he said.
"You can see how the cat plucked the deer’s fur and spat it out next to its carcass before chomping its way through the ribcage to access the organs.
"But I cannot understand who would have shot it and particularly at point blank range".
"Perhaps a car hit the deer and the driver put it out of its misery."
