What is Big Cats in Britain

We are an investigative group made up of a network of researchers across the country. We gather evidence and information with the aim of discovering exactly what species of big cats are roaming the British countryside and how they came to be here. For our purpose the term 'big cats' denotes any feline not indigenous to the British Isles or any unknown indigenous big cat. We offer - and are continuing to expand - the biggest online archive of information on British big cats.

'It was 100 per cent definite I saw panther'

Monday, January 16, 2012
The Tamworth Herald

YET another Herald reader has revealed that they have seen the 'big cat' said to be roaming the area – this time in Polesworth.
And another reader has sent in a photograph of what he believes may be a big cat paw print which he spotted in Hopwas Woods.
She told the Herald: "It was about 6.30pm and the weather was good, it was daylight.
"My dog stopped, stood very still and looked over towards some trees. We heard a loud rustle and I told my son it was probably birds in a tree. Then I saw a very thick long tail about 30 foot away and then saw a very, very large black cat walking stealthlike slowly past us.
"I told my son it wasn't a dog or cat and walked towards it. To my amazement, it was a black panther with a straight profile face.
"It walked past and with the silhouette from the sun against the fields, I was 100 per cent definite what I had seen.
"My husband came with me the next day and we found a large scratch on a tree and many scratches up the side of the tree – I assume where it grips on to climb.
"I did email a big cat website, but did not email theHerald as I thought people wouldn't believe me."
Meanwhile Chris Middlehurst, of Coton Green, contacted the Herald
to say: "My family and I were up walking at Hopwas near the mast, and came across these prints.
"We had been up there just before Christmas and seen some more like this.
"Don't know if its a big cat, but they seem a substantial size. We didn't see the animal!"
Last week's paw print has met with differing views however, with some people believing it to be the print of a large dog.
Pat and Chris Venables wrote: "We think that the photo of a paw print in last week's Herald is just a dog print and we have sent this picture as an example.
"It belongs to our dog Katy and she is only a Labrador with big feet!
"It was taken on Happisburgh beach and shows just how misleading footprints can be, it has not been altered in any way."
