What is Big Cats in Britain

We are an investigative group made up of a network of researchers across the country. We gather evidence and information with the aim of discovering exactly what species of big cats are roaming the British countryside and how they came to be here. For our purpose the term 'big cats' denotes any feline not indigenous to the British Isles or any unknown indigenous big cat. We offer - and are continuing to expand - the biggest online archive of information on British big cats.

Feline ‘as big as a German Shepherd dog’ spied in Somerset

Thursday, January 05, 2012
Central Somerset Gazette

A large black cat-like creature has been spotted prowling across woods in Glastonbury.
The cat – described as being jet black, and around the size of a German Shepherd dog – was spotted by Sarah Rawlinson as she walked her dog in Wick Hollow on December 28.
“I thought it might have been a dog at first,” she said.
“But it was watching me with these huge, intense, yellow eyes from the other side of the road. I wasn’t really sure what to do. After a moment or so, it leapt about 3ft into the woods.”
When Sarah got home, she told her mother what she had seen, and was surprised when her mother said she believed she had seen the same creature about a month ago.
The sighting is thought to be the first reported in central Somerset since 2002, when a large, panther-like cat was spotted in Meare.
The area has proven to be something of a hot spot for big cat sightings, with large cat-type animals reported in August 2001 in Butleigh, in Meare in 2002, in Banwell, Winscombe and Wedmore in 2007, Draycott in 2008 and Somerton in 2010.
Police have said they have not had any sightings of large cats reported to them in Glastonbury. They are, however, urging people to people to report any sightings of the animal if they believe it could be a risk.
Many big sightings are believed to be have due to Maine Coon or Savannah cats, both particularly large breeds of domestic cat.
Male Maine Coons can weigh up to 11kg, and can be up to 41cm high and 36 cm long, with a long, thick tail. A spokeswoman for Orchard Veterinary Group said they had not been made aware of any big cat sightings, but said it would be unusual for a domestic cat to grow to the size of a German Shepherd dog.
They also said they were not aware of anyone with a large, domestic breed cat in that area.
“Some domestic tom cats can grow to be pretty big, though,” she said.
Have you seen the cat? If so, we’d love to hear from you.
